Physiotherapy support brings back Kate’s zest for life

Kate has regular visits from the physiotherapy team.jpg

For Home & Community Support client Kate, visits from Bolton Clarke’s physiotherapy team have been helping her regain her confidence after several stints in hospital left her unable to lead her usually active life.

Physiotherapist Team Leader Narelle said Kate had spent several long periods in hospital over the past two years, including undergoing spinal surgery for adult onset scoliosis and a pacemaker insertion.

This had left the normally active 81-year-old very deconditioned despite periods of inpatient rehab.

“She had no energy to get to her regular exercise group, which she had been enjoying attending twice weekly,” Narelle said.

“She’d also had to stop attending her writing group and presenting her ‘Reading for Radio’ activities as she felt too weak.”

Kate’s visiting nurses suggested physiotherapy visits to help her rebuild her muscles and regain stamina.

“The Bolton Clarke physio has helped me get my feet back on the ground enabling me to slowly take up the activities I was able to do prior to hospitalisation,” she said.

“I always enjoy it when the physio comes. It’s not surprising that I feel absolutely exhausted after each session but I know its gradually giving me back my strength.”

Physiotherapists play a vital role in helping people retain and regain independence after hospitalisation, which in turn can help prevent frailty and support positive ageing.

In-home reablement services are an important stepping stone to returning to regular exercise and social activities.

World Physiotherapy Day on 8 September recognises the important role physiotherapists play in supporting positive ageing.

From her regular sessions with the Bolton Clarke team, Kate has now been able to start reconnecting with friends and attending her radio reading and writing group.
