HIV program

Our specialist HIV team supports people living with HIV in Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. The team consists of HIV Clinical Nurse Consultants, a Nurse Practitioner and HIV District Nurse Specialists, with a Clinical Team Manager based within the Homeless Persons Program. The HIV Program is funded by the Sexual Health and Viral Hepatitis Section, Public Health Division of the Victorian Department of Health.

Clients visited by the HIV team nurses come from diverse backgrounds. They include long-term survivors, families with children, refugees and asylum seekers, people newly diagnosed with HIV, and people experiencing homelessness.

Many people living with HIV are now ageing, and some experience multiple health problems at an earlier age than those who do not have HIV. Our HIV team provides health assessment, care coordination, supports people's health and well-being, provides clinical nursing care, education and health promotion, and chronic illness and pain management through to palliative care.

The team conducts education programs for Bolton Clarke’s employees and external organisations on the management of complex issues related to HIV including medication management and clinical care, mental health, HIV-related cognitive impairment, drug and alcohol issues, health promotion and HIV prevention.
