100 years for Betty thanks to good food and sunshine

Bolton Clarke Riverwood resident Betty has put her century-long life down to good food and sunshine.

Alongside five generations of her family, Betty celebrated her 100th birthday with special afternoon tea at the home.

The centenarian’s daughter Julie Burnett says her longevity is all thanks to the food from the land and sunshine the family had through the years.

“When mum married dad she became a farmer’s wife so she spent most of the time when we were younger fattening pigs, cattle, sheep and they had a big orchard and veggie garden.

“She was a hard-working woman and had to be very self-sufficient in those days and she still loves sitting outside in the sunshine and gardens.”

Prior to moving into aged care, Betty lived in the co-located retirement village at Riverwood since she was 65.

“A lot of people said ‘fancy Betty moving into a retirement village’ but she absolutely loved it and the lifestyle was just perfect for her,” Julie said.

“She joined the St Matther’s Church, Mother’s Union, Probus, walking groups, she was always knitting and gardening – especially roses.”

For the family, it’s not surprise that she is celebrating her 100th birthday with her younger sister closely following at the age of 96.
